CoMoveIT Honoured with KU Leuven Medal of Honour — Poised for Global Expansion in Intelligent Rehabilitation Technology
Bruges, May 13, 2025 — CoMoveIT, a pioneering KU Leuven spin-off revolutionizing mobility for people with severe motor disabilities, has received the prestigious KU Leuven Medal of Honour for Societal Impact in Rehabilitation. The award was presented on May 9 during the university’s 600th anniversary celebration at Concertgebouw Brugge, following the anniversary concert Beyond the Horizon of Thought.
KU Leuven’s Rector, Prof. Luc Sels, praised CoMoveIT for its transformative contributions to assistive mobility and inclusive innovation. “KU Leuven honours CoMoveIT for its groundbreaking wheelchair control system, developed in close collaboration with engineers, clinicians, researchers, and end users. Their participatory development model is unique — empowering users not only through the end product but also throughout the creation process,” said Rector Sels. “As a spin-off, CoMoveIT exemplifies how academic excellence can be translated into global social impact.”
Levi Rijsbrack, a long-time user who played an essential role in both product development and public representation, accepted the award alongside his father Carl Rijsbrack and co-founders Frederik Vervenne and Elegast Monbaliu. The moment underscored the deeply personal and inclusive mission that defines CoMoveIT’s approach.

De onderscheiding werd op 9 mei uitgereikt tijdens de viering van het 600-jarig bestaan van de universiteit in het Concertgebouw Brugge, aansluitend op het jubileumconcert Beyond the Horizon of Thought.
Rector van KU Leuven, prof. Luc Sels, prees CoMoveIT voor zijn vernieuwende bijdragen aan mobiliteitshulpmiddelen en inclusieve innovatie. “KU Leuven bekroont CoMoveIT voor zijn baanbrekend besturingssysteem voor rolstoelen, ontwikkeld in nauwe samenwerking met ingenieurs, clinici, onderzoekers en eindgebruikers. Hun aanpak is uniek: gebruikers worden niet alleen gehoord, maar zijn structureel betrokken bij ontwikkeling, testen en publieke vertegenwoordiging," aldus rector Luc Sels. "Als KU Leuven-spin-off is CoMoveIT een toonbeeld van hoe wetenschappelijke innovatie kan uitgroeien tot maatschappelijk ondernemerschap met impact."
Namens CoMoveIT nam Levi Rijsbrack, als eindgebruiker actief betrokken bij de ontwikkeling en presentatie van het product, de erepenning in ontvangst. Hij werd bijgestaan door zijn vader Carl Rijsbrack, en medeoprichters Frederik Vervenne en Elegast Monbaliu.
"Deze erepenning voelt als een bekroning voor ons voltallig team," zegt Frederik Vervenne, CEO van CoMoveIT. “Het bevestigt het traject dat we hebben afgelegd — van academisch onderzoek naar een internationale missie rond empowerment.
