CoMoveIT is a spin-off of KU Leuven Campus Bruges, founded in 2021 with one clear mission:
During his many years of rehabilitation practice, Dr. Elegast Monbaliu noticed how existing wheelchair controls fell short for people with complex movement disorders such as cerebral palsy or MS. This clinical reality was the starting point for a multidisciplinary research project within KU Leuven, in which Rehabilitation Sciences, Industrial Engineering Sciences and Biosystems Engineering joined forces.
With Sotirios Gakopoulos as a doctoral student, among others, years of evidence-based research were conducted into mobility in cases of severe motor disorders. By linking artificial intelligence to clinical movement patterns, the team developed an adaptive head-foot control system that continuously adapts to the user. The result: a unique academic prototype, born out of science and practice.
Based on this research, CoMoveIT is now developing intelligent head and head-foot controls for electric wheelchairs. Highly sensitive sensors and self-learning algorithms enable extremely accurate, proportional and reliable control, even in cases of pronounced spasticity or involuntary movements.
More control means less tension, more freedom of movement and more independence.
From Belgium, we are building international growth in collaboration with leading wheelchair manufacturers worldwide. What started as a clinical necessity has grown into an innovation with global impact.
